I love the word kula. First of all it rhymes with "hula" and that always fun to think about and should not be mistaken for kahlua. Second, because in Sanskrit it means "community". The feeling of community is a great supportive feeling. It's more than just family or friendships. It's that one connection a group of strangers may have in common that come together as one in that moment. Too deep? Sorry, it came from the heart.
I must say the sense of community that is being built around yoga is amazing. I've connected with so many people since teaching yoga it makes me happy at the end of the day to share yoga. Those who continue to attend my yoga classes can experience the kula building and watch it grow deeper. As I listen to people connect in class, watch them practice as individuals and then wonder how people feel after class, I realize more and more the yoga is working within me even outside of class.
As I begin to develop my yoga business plans for This Yoga Works! Yoga Club, engaging preteens and teens in the Dublin schools, I must not forget the underlying importance of creating that kula konnection that can benefit them outside of class. In a world where social media has taken over, created and broken up friends, the significance of face-to-face connection time between younger generations is key to social development. Academics are just not enough. Sports are not enough either. Both of those I see as competitive positive activities and although very beneficial to growing up, I feel yoga is another layer. Yoga will be an added positive impact on the kids who join Yoga Club and have that one connection to share.
Join me in building a kula connection!
Namaste,
Diane
