I read an article on LinkedIn that spoke to me on several levels. One take-away I had was about the sense of purpose. Don't we all at the end of the day just want to have a sense of purpose in life. When we feel like we belong to a team, organization, community, etc we all work toward the same end results. If we don't have any direction on what those end results might be like setting goals, then things can become unraveled, disorganized and the need for people to feel like micromanagers as the process changes each time. However, if we all have a set goal in mind then we work hard to reach the goal and the shared purpose.
My breakdown:
Ohio State fans have a shared purpose, but can not control the outcome. However, if the team loses the fans will have similar outcomes of emotion - sad, angry, upset etc.
In a company that is team based the coworkers have a shared outcome - to produce a product or deliver a service. There is a purpose and sense of belonging for the team members. However if team is always under a microscope and never left to self-think or feel empowered, the team's purpose changes as they react based on leadership decisions that can change on a whim.
In yoga, the students who arrive at class ready to start all have a purpose to be there. It may not all the same purpose and produce different outcomes for each yogi, but the sense of belonging is there and lead without micromanaging along the way. The yogi is empowered to do what is right in his/her body while still staying engaged until the end.
